Independence day events on Cape Cod 2012

The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is a federal holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of the Independence on July 4th, 1776. Although this fourth of July happens to land mid week on a Wednesday, their is still plenty to do here on Cape Cod.What better way to show your gratitude for all who served our country then participating in some of the following events for this holiday week:

Fireworks:

Monday, July 2

Orleans - Rock Harbor 9:00 pm - The annual fireworks display at Rock Harbor in honor of the 4th of July will be begin at dusk. Put on your red, white, and blue, and come celebrate America's birthday in Orleans.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

Falmouth - 8:45pm - The fireworks are scheduled at dusk at Falmouth Heights Beach.Spectators are asked to bring a radio and to set it to 92.7,WMVY, in order to hear the music that accompanies the show.

Hyannis - 8:45pm - Head down to the beaches around Hyannis Harbor for the best views of the fireworks. Pack a picnic dinner and have dinner on the beach or grab a bite to eat at one of the downtown restaurants and walk to the beaches afterwards to catch the fireworks.
*Aselton is one of the prime spots to watch the fireworks display around 9 p.m. There is no rain date.
There will be parking bans from 2 to 6 p.m. on Main Street, Hyannis on the Fourth, and South Street will be closed to traffic. All of Main Street, as well as Old Colony Road and Ocean Street, between South and Main streets, will be closed to traffic beginning at 3 p.m.
From 5 p.m. to midnight, there will be a parking ban south of South Street on Ocean, Old Colony, Gosnold and all streets off Gosnold. Kalmus Beach will be available for handicapped parking only.

Nantucket - 8:30pm - Every July 4th, Jetties Beach on Nantucket is the place to be to view spectacular fireworks. What could be better than watching fireworks on a beach on Nantucket. A great family event!
Provincetown - 8:30pm - Enjoy 4th of July Fireworks in P-town! They begin at dusk and can be seen from any bayside beach.

Parades & Celebrations:

July 4, 2012
Bourne - 10:00 am - Clowns, bands, floats, fire trucks, sirens, horses, costumes, scouts, veterans and lots of flags will be part of the Fourth of July scene once again along main Street in Buzzards Bay. The parade route will be the intersection of Academy Drive and Main Street to the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Building.
Centerville - 10:00 am - Neighborhood floats, decorated bikes and wagons, clowns, and bands will flood the streets of Centerville in this fun, festive parade. The parade will be followed by food, fun, and field games at the ball field behind the Centerville Recreation Building.

Chatham - 9:00 am - Celebrating Chatham's rich maritime traditions and spirit and its unique position as the first stop of the east wind. A bigger than ever parade down Main St. with more marching bands, more floats, and a special Grand Marshall will begin the day's festivities. Parade Theme is "Chatham Through The Years, a Living History Parade."

Falmouth - 10:00 am - Children and families dress in creative Uncle Sam costumes. Beginning at the Village Green at 10:00 am, they parade down Main Street to Margaret E. Noonan Park where a patriotic sing along will take place.
Orleans - 10:00 am - Marching bands, floats, music, clowns, and much, much more. The parade route goes down Eldredge Park Way, Route 6A, Main Street and Route 28 and back to Eldredge Park.
Provincetown - 11:00 am - Come watch creative floats, marching bands, and enjoy the star spangled excitement of this parade. The parade begins at 11 am at the Harbor Hotel and proceeds along Commercial Street until Franklin Street.

Barnstable - 9:00 am - Don't miss this 4th of July tradition. Big floats, small floats, bikes walkers, motorcycles and dogs are all included in this parade. It begins at the County Complex on Railroad Avenue and proceed down Main Street (Route 6A); left onto Mill Way and continue to the Village Hollow where it will end with various activities.
*Main Street in Hyannis will be filled with marching bands, a kids’ parade of decorated bikes, and more at 4 p.m. The theme for the parade is “America the Beautiful,” and retired Cape Cod Community College president Kathy Schatzberg is the grand marshal. Before the parade, there’ll be a boat parade from Hyannis Yacht Club at 1 p.m. to circle Hyannis inner harbor at 1:30 p.m. Afterward, the Barnstable Town Band will play from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the village green, and the Mike Dumas Band will perform in Aselton Park from 7 p.m. until dusk. WXTK-FM 95.1 will broadcast a coordinated musical soundtrack during the fireworks.
Nantucket - 10:00 am - downtown Nantucket's annual 4th of July celebration. Face painting, sand painting, dunk tank, watermelon/pie eating contests, kid's parade, pet parade and more. The Grande Finale of the day is the famous water fight with the Nantucket Fire Department at noon.

Eastham - 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. On July 4th at the Eastham Schoolhouse Museum there will be an old fashioned celebration with lemonade, cookies, and ice cream from 1-4pm. Come on down to the Eastham and enjoy a great fun filled afternoon this 4th of July with the family!

Fathers Day on Cape Cod

Happy Fathers Day!!

Today, on June 17th,  2012 marks a special day dedicated to recognize & celebrate the contribution that father's have made to your life and others.

Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the 'father' figures in a particular extended family. Father figures can include fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives.

Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. Some common gifts include: sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies, gift cards and tools for household maintenance.

Here on Cape Cod, One of the biggest traditions is the annual Fathers Day Car Show

This is the 18th annual Father's Day car show that fills the length of Main St. Hyannis. Thousands of spectators come out to admire the sea of classic automobiles. Food vendors and other activities are also featured and the event runs from Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM through Sunday 9 AM to 4 PM. It is free to spectators and a great family day of fun! After 17 years, the show has developed quite a following. There is a Craft Show  on The Village Green in Front of Town Hall.There will be lots entertainment for the kids including a Magician, Balloons, Cartoon Artists, Face Painters and much more!

Also this year, for all the Motorcylce lovers, there is the Bikes On Ice Motorcycle Showcase
Sunday from 9am to 4pm at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center in the Butler Rink
Bikes On Ice features 80 custom, stock and antique motorcycles as well as vendors of all kinds! Examples include former NHL Player Brian Leetch's commemorative Harley Davidson that he received when he retired; a 1946 Harley Davidson owned by a local Native who has clocked more than 300,000 miles on several cross-country trips; and local artist Greg Vaughan's ink bike along with his unique style of artwork on helmets and more. A capella group Cape Harmony will perform from 10-11AM followed by other live entertainment. A motorcycle safety clinic will take place and over 30 raffle prizes will be given away thanks to local businesses. All proceeds will benefit the Hyannis Youth & Community Center and Cape Cod Child Development. Cost is FREE

Memorial Day Weekend Starts it All

Summer is almost here!! You may be wondering if I have my dates confused since the first day of Summer doesn't actually begin until June 21st, 2011. As that fact is true, still for many businesses, vacationers, locals and schools, the unofficial season kicks off on Memorial Day Weekend each year.

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Originated in the years following the Civil War, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. Every year the holiday falls on the last Monday of May, a time when many show their commemoration by visiting cemeteries or memorials, gatherings between friends and family, and participating in parades. Some Parades and Ceremonies for this Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, 2011 include:

• Memorial Day Parade; Ceremony, 9:45am. Village Green and Main Street, Falmouth.
• Memorial Day Ceremony, 10am-11am. World War I Memorial, Main Street, Chatham.

As most of us do take this long, usually warm, weekend to gather friends and family for: barbeques, vacations, time spent on the beach, shopping and eating out. We treat this three-day holiday as if it does mark the onset of the season, there is so much to do rain or shine, it is sure to be a great getaway for the weekend.  How do you plan to make the most of your Memorial Day Weekend? I've put together a few suggestions to help you out:

• Spend a day at one of the 115 beautiful Sandy Beaches of Cape Cod, build sandcastles, swim, or just lay out and enjoy the sun. A must see is the Cape Cod National Seashore which consists of forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs which offer a glimpse of Cape Cod’s past and continuing ways of life.

• Get up close and personal with some of the world’s largest and most majestic creatures, when taking a whale watching cruise. One of the most unique and exciting things to do while on Cape Cod, a whale watching excursion should be a must do, on your list.

• Ride along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which consists of 22 miles of paved surface with a few hills, and well-marked automobile crossings making it ideal for cyclists along with a wide unpaved surface to accommodate horseback riding, walkers, and runners, through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet.

• Eat ice cream at one of the many ice cream shops along Rte. 28 or tucked away in various locations close to beaches, shops, and other town center locations.

• Take a ferry or plane ride to one of Cape Cod's Islands. Whether choosing to tour Marthas Vineyard and learn of its rich history, thriving culture, or taking in its miles of seemingly endless pristine beaches, clay cliffs and plentiful bird watching, or partaking in the diverse outdoor activities or the many artists, handcrafts and one-of-a-kind boutiques, the Vineyard provides these and so much more. Or maybe a day visit to Nantucket, which is known for its historical integrity, natural beauty, cultural offerings, world-class dining or shopping. Simply the relaxed atmosphere and island-style way of life may appeal to you.

• Cape Cod's colorful history is the reason why the Cape contains so many great museums today.  A visit to one of Cape Cod's museums is a great family outing (children are specifically catered to at many museums) and can also satisfy the most inquisitive history buff. Whether it’s a solemn remembrance at the John F. Kennedy museum or exploring treasures from the authentic pirate shipwreck The Whydah, Cape Cods museums will both educate and delight the entire family.
• The rhythm of the train and the spirit of the crew will whisk you away on an exhilarating journey along beautiful cranberry bogs, natural woodlands, lush marshes and more while aboard the Cape Cod Scenic Railroad. Enjoy these scenic views between Hyannis and the Cape Cod Canal with sounds of the chugging train and whistle blows. Whether with children, couples or single passengers, there is variety of scenic excursion options to include meals as well, while on this fun-filled two-hour trip.

• Enjoying a play at one of the many local theatres is sure to be a great time for both children and adults. Whether giving youth the oppurtunity to develop a love and appreciation of theater while at the Harwich Junior Theatre. Or going to theatres to experience the birth of new plays before they move on to major stages around the country, such as the Cape Cod Theatre Project. Be one of the first to give your applause to a production well done!  

There's no doubt that Cape Cod has these listed activities and so much more to offer such as: jet skiing, kayaking, Shopping, Antiquing, Fishing, Miniature Golf, etc. Look out for further articles highlighting some of our local favorites. All in all, however you and your family choose to spend this Memorial Day Weekend make sure you have fun, share laughs, and explore all that Cape Cod has to offer.
