Cape Cod was battered by high winds and a strong coastal surge on Monday morning
as Hurricane Sandy made landfall in
New Jersey. As of early Monday afternoon
nearly 20,000 Cape Codders were without power, The noon high tide brought severe
beach erosion to Falmouth and the east facing beaches on the Outer Cape.Later in
the day, Nstar reported nearly 38,000 customers
without power with the towns of
Barnstable and Falmouth being the hardest hit communities. We were very lucky
through this one though, as the
Lighthouse Inn seemed to have came out unscathed
through it all. As the waves crashed against West Dennis Beach and Weir
Creek crossed over Lighthouse Road, thankfully only minimal damage was
experienced in the immediate area. As for some of our neighboring towns,
unfortunately flooded roads from the tide, fallen branches, damage to
ramps, houses and structures along with the overwhelming amount of power
outages, proved to be a ominous way to bring in Halloween on Cape Cod. However, as
Governor Deval Patrick said today he was relieved that the state escaped serious damage from Hurricane Sandy, stating“We are very, very fortunate indeed. ”
Reliefs efforts to those affected by the Hurricane specifically in New Jersey and New York continue.
